- Grieg Peer Gynt Suite No.1
- Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto
- Borodin Symphony No.2
“Dear Mr Grieg: I am writing to you with regard to a project I propose to undertake… I propose to adapt Peer Gynt for the stage. Will you compose the music it requires?” With this letter, written by Henrik Ibsen, began one of the most successful collaborations in history between a playwright and a composer. The suite includes the tranquil evocation of a morning sunrise, the beautiful Anitra’s Dance and the mischievous In the Hall of the Mountain King.
Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto is considered one of the most challenging concertos in the violinists repertoire. It was initially deemed as unplayable and its postponed premiere received mixed critical reactions. It has since become one of Tchaikovsky's most beloved works - its effortlessly flowing lyricism shining through.
Borodin spent eight years composing his Second Symphony and revising it many times. The Russian nature of the music is apparent, and Borodin used much material from his incomplete opera Prince Igor. It thus conjures up images of the wide open skies of the Russian Steppe, the romance and chivalry of a Princely court and the final movement is an orgy of revelry and feasting. The music displays exceptional melodic charm (often with an appealing Oriental tang, reflecting Borodin’s family pedigree) as well as a sensuous, poetic beauty.
