'The Worst Housekeeper' is how HG Wells described his mother, Sarah, who took on the top job at Uppark near Midhurst in 1880 when ‘Bertie' was just 13 years old and the family in dire financial straits. Her tenure at the great house was used to great comic effect in Wells' novel Tono-Bungay – but was his damning summary really fair? Writer Tessa Boase (author of The Housekeeper’s Tale) revisits the evidence to weigh up Mrs Wells’ performance.
The talk will be held at Capron House, formerly Midhurst Grammar School where Wells studied and later taught whilst his mother was at Uppark. The talk will be followed by a cream tea (included in ticket price), and a chance to buy a copy of Tessa’s book The Housekeeper’s Tale.
Presented by Film Hub South East as part of the BFI’s Sci-Fi: Days of Fear and Wonder.
